A few days ago I noticed the photo was getting an influx of reins on Pinterest. I didn’t realize the photo had gone viral on social media until I saw my old roommate had shared it to her Facebook page (not knowing it was mine), and then I noticed all the other shares. I’ve been blown away by all the recent repins and reposts on social media!
The comments on social media have ranged from, “Love it! Great idea!” to “Too much stuff! Those kids are probably spoiled brats!”. All I can say in response is: my kids loved them, and 9 days out of 10 they don’t act like spoiled brats. 😉
I mean look at these angels on Easter last year:
A few years back I had a friend in a Mom’s group whose mom did something similar; using reusable items as Easter baskets. I loved the idea, and I’ve been doing it ever since; each year trying to think of things my kids will need or use in the following year.
These were their Froggy Potty baskets from a few years back when they were about to start potty training: 🙂
Last year I came up with umbrellas because I knew it would be something they would use since they were going to be starting school. The Bubble Umbrellas I purchased off Amazon were the perfect size to fit a decent amount of goodies, and I also love the way they propped up. These umbrellas also come in a variety of colors; I loved the polka dots for the girls!
I filled the umbrellas with some toys and activities I knew they would love. Here are a few of the items I found (or similar): Scholastic Level 1 reading books, activity books, DVDs (Sleeping Beauty, Planes Fire and Rescue , and Scooby Doo), kids gardening tools, Melissa & Doug Placemats, reusable Popsicle trays, small LEGO sets, a bit of candy, and a few dollar store & Target dollar bin goodies. I also picked up some basket filling at Target to give it that Easter basket feel.
I chose to fill my baskets with only a small amount of candy since my daughter has allergies, but make them your own, and fill them anyway you wish!
I apologize in advance to any of you who believe umbrellas shouldn’t be opened indoors, as I’ve never been very superstitious.
My one word of advice would be to put it together the night before, so that they don’t get discovered before Easter.
Where to shop for budget friendly umbrella basket goodies:
Amazon (with Prime shipping)
The Dollar Store
Target (dollar bins)
99 Cent Store
Dollar Tree
Other ideas for baskets:
Cute toy bins that you can reuse to store toys, helmets for bikes, beach pails, toy dump trucks, or the Froggy Potty for potty training (my personal favorite).
Other non-candy ideas to add to baskets:
– Sidewalk Chalk
– Bath toys
– Pool toys
– Beach towel
– Sand toys
– Bubbles
– Matchbox cars
– Shopkins

Thanks for sharing!!! This has really sparked my creativity for Easter!! I usually make things for the winter holidays and just bought easter baskets that were overpriced and my daughter would eventually destroy it or throw it away but I have a feeling she’s going to love this idea.
Barb says
I’m so glad to hear it, Azeria! Thanks!!

Love your ideas & think your goodies are very mindful! I did watering can baskets last year filled with gardening tools, gloves, seed packets & little peat pots. Felt very useful & educational as well. Been trying to think of something similar for this year & think this is it! Thank you! Btw your triplets are adorable!!

What a awesome idea! I love it!! I have just one question. What do you recommend to secure the items in the basket?
Barb says
Thanks Nikki! The goodies stayed pretty secure propped up in the Easter basket grass. You could always try double sided tape if items aren’t staying in place.
